Atmospheric Formaldehyde
The majority of formaldehyde found in the environment is a result of processes taking place in the upper atmosphere. It is an intermediate gas which is produced during the oxidation of methane and can be used as an indicator of anthropogenic pollution and biomass burning. It however does not accumulate in the environment as it is easily broken down by sunlight. Industrial Use of Formaldehyde
Formaldehyde is a common precursor to more complex compounds which are used in several industrial applications. Formaldehyde resin is used in the textile industry to produce non-crease fabrics and is also a key component in the manufacture of automobiles. Formaldehyde solution is commonly used as a disinfectant to kill most bacteria and fungi and can also be used to preserve tissues or cells for scientific analysis. The most common source of formaldehyde exposure is via inhalation by thermal/chemical decomposition of formaldehyde based resins or emissions from formaldehyde solutions.
