Electrochemical cells have been in use for gas detection for over 50 years. In that time, many types of detection cells have been developed. A gas is a potential candidate for electrochemical detection if it oxidizes or reduces at standard conditions and if a suitable membrane material exists to control diffusion.
For gases that meet these criteria, electrochemical cell technology offers inherently linear response and good precision at low concentrations. Linearity allows calibration with only two points. If the atmosphere is used as one point, only one supplied calibration gas is required to calibrate an electrochemical gas detector.
Each gas requires a cell tuned to that specific gas. However, since the outputs of the cells are similar, the basic electronics, data management, and transmission process can be supported by a common modular platform.
