How to measure ammonia gas in poultry farm ?

Oct 30, 2025 Leave a message

Ammonia in livestock farms mainly comes from the decomposition of feces and feed. Excessive ammonia can affect the health and production performance of livestock and poultry, and also pose a threat to the safety of workers.

1.The safe concentration of ammonia gas to animals in Ethernet modules:

≤ 10 ppm (ideal state)

Poultry (chicken): extremely sensitive, above 7-10 ppm may cause conjunctivitis, respiratory diseases, and affect weight gain and feed conversion rate.

Pigs: 10-20 ppm is the warning line, exceeding it can irritate the respiratory tract and increase susceptibility to pneumonia.

Cows: 5-10 ppm or more may affect feed intake and milk production.

2.The range of ammonia exceeding the standard for animals:

> 20 ppm

20-50 ppm: significantly irritates animal mucous membranes (eyes, nose, respiratory tract), causing discomfort, and production performance (daily weight gain, milk production, egg production rate) begins to significantly decrease.

>50 ppm: seriously endangers animal health, leading to severe respiratory diseases and a significant decrease in immunity

3.Occupational exposure limit of ammonia to human body:

Chinese standard (GBZ 2.1-2019):

Time weighted average allowable concentration (PC-TWA):

20 mg/m ³ (approximately 28 ppm)

Short term exposure permissible concentration (PC-STEL):

30 mg/m ³ (approximately 42 ppm)

4.The excessive range of ammonia on the human body:

>28 ppm (8-hour average) or>42 ppm (15 minute average)

Exceeding the occupational exposure limit is considered as exceeding the working environment standard. Long term exposure can irritate the eyes, throat, and lungs, leading to chronic bronchitis

Therefore, it is necessary to install ammonia concentration detectors in breeding farms, and staff should carry portable gas detectors with them, which can effectively detect ammonia concentration before entering specific areas and avoid poisoning incidents.

The fixed ammonia gas detector produced by our company, when used in conjunction with an alarm light, can detect the concentration of ammonia in the environment 24 hours a day and issue an audible and visual alarm when the concentration exceeds the standard. At the same time, it can cooperate with the gas alarm control panel to remotely monitor the concentration on site. When the concentration exceeds the standard, the exhaust fan can be linked to start. A portable gas detector can be worn at any time to display the concentration on site. When the concentration exceeds the standard, it will emit sound and light alarms as well as vibration alarms.
