Offshore drilling platforms/refineries:

- Alarm threshold: Usually, two levels of alarms are set:

- Level 1 alarm: 10 ppm (indicating leakage risk).

- Secondary alarm: 15 ppm (Forced evacuation).

Confined Spaces (such as storage tanks) : Before entry, detection is required. The H₂S concentration must be less than 5 ppm and continuously monitored.

 

2.Sewage treatment and chemical industry

Open area: ≤10 ppm is allowed (but a portable detector must be worn).

Sludge treatment room: The concentration may rise sharply. Fixed detectors and ventilation systems are required.

Chemical plant (sulfide production) : Implement the 1 ppm TWA standard of ACGIH (due to the higher risk of long-term exposure).

3.Mining and tunneling operations

Underground operations: Emergency ventilation must be initiated when the H₂S concentration is ≥5 ppm, and operations should be halted when it is ≥10 ppm.

 

4.Protective Equipment and Monitoring Requirements

(1).Testing equipment:

Portable detector: For personal use, real-time alarm (recommended range: 0-100 ppm).

Fixed detector: Installed in areas prone to leakage (such as pump rooms and storage tanks), it is linked to the ventilation system.

(2).Respiratory protection:

10-50 ppm: Half mask + acidic gas filter cartridge (such as 3M 60926).

>50 ppm: A positive pressure air breathing apparatus (SCBA) or a supplied long tube breathing apparatus must be used.

(3).Training and Practice:

All personnel must master the physical and chemical properties of H₂S, escape routes and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills.
